Now, about that schedule…

Much has been written about the schedule that FINALLY came out, thanks to WVU and the Big East for finally working out the inevitable.

So, without a lot of hocus pocus, here are my amateur thoughts on the upcoming 2012 slate of opponents…

  1. Sept. 1 – Savannah State…Have to agree with Pistols Guy on this one. Given the QB situation, what better way to start the season than with an opponent that would allow for some experimentation, if necessary, and definitely provide a soft environment for the new QB’s to get their feet wet.
  2. Sept. 8 – at Arizona…Experiment over. QB decision needs to be made. This will be our first true taste of what life will be like without Weeden2Blackmon.
  3. Sept. 15 – Louisiana…Ok, what should be a nice break before the bye week. But anyone with a decent memory recalls recent struggles with teams like this, so don’t take anything for granted. The atmosphere for this game will depend GREATLY on what happened the week before.
  4. Sept. 29 – Texas…The goods news is OSU will have had 3 games and a bye week to get things in order before playing one of the best defenses in the conference. We will also have some idea as to the improvement, if any, for our defense…the one that was gouged for over 200 yds rushing last year in Austin. Here’s hoping the turnovers keep coming. Oh, and think about this…any one of our 3 QB’s could step in and start for the Longhorns.
  5. Oct. 13 – at Kansas…At first glance, this will be only slightly more competitive than last year’s massacre in Stillwater. The Pokes have another bye to recover from UT and prep for the Jayhawks. At second glance, I have no clue what to think about this game. Weis is definitely a better coach than Gill (I think), and they do have some athletes. Even still, probably an easy win for OSU.
  6. Oct. 20 – Iowa State…If the Cowboys don’t DEMOLISH the Cyclones on shere principal, I will be sorely disappointed.
  7. Oct. 27 – TCU…Who the heck knows. Patterson is a good coach, but even without the drug scandal, the Frogs will be making their way through a MUCH tougher season. Not a gimme, but OSU should take care of business at home.
  8. Nov. 3 – at Kansas State…The Cowboys could very easily be 6-0 when they arrive in Manhattan. Reality, however, comes a callin’ on Nov 3rd, 2012. This game starts a BRUTAL home stretch for OSU that could easily result in a 7-5 record. Wonder what the Wildcat’s attitude will be coming into this game? Any guesses? This will be the true indicator of whether or not the Cowboys are rebuilding or simply reloading.
  9. Nov. 10 – West Virginia…Depending on what leads up to this game and the opposing schedules on that weekend, if this isn’t the sight for ESPN Gameday people at the mothership need to be fired. Red Bull Express returns to Stilly. Seriously.
  10. Nov. 17 – Texas Tech…The Red Raiders will definitely show up ready to make amends for the slaughter in Lubbock at the hands of OSU. Their efforts should result in a slightly less embarrassing beat down.
  11. Nov. 24 – at Oklahoma…All we need to remember for an indicator of what’s in store when the Cowboys head to Norman…44-10. This will be a brawl.
  12. Dec. 1 – at Baylor…DANGER! DANGER! DANGER! RG3 is gone. Kendall Wright is gone. But Briles has proven he can recruit and win. I hate not playing OU for the last regular season game…this is ripe for a let down, and Baylor will be fired up.

This all depends, of course, on what happens…to the QB’s, injuries, what other teams turn out to be. Hard to really put anything meaningful in writing because it could all completely change BEFORE anyone has played a single game.

The potential for this season is at the extremes…things better than expected, breaks going our way, and we could be looking at another undefeated run. Flip that, and OSU could easily be 7-5. Three of our last 5 games are on the road (KSU, OU, Baylor)…I think I recall those being the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th best teams in the conference in 2011.

Last season I thought OSU’s schedule, while considered rough by many, played greatly in their favor after the A&M game. The upcoming season has a whole different flavor for me right now.

But, we have a LONG way to go before any of this really starts to take shape. For now, I’ll eagerly anticipate the start of spring practice.

GO POKES!!!

WINNERS! Final thoughts on Game 13 and our Season of Hope.

My wife’s arm is visibly bruised…well, not really, but she said it is a bit sore in one spot…

That spot is near the shoulder where I grabbed her with my right hand after the SECOND yank by that poor freshman kicker for Stanford. Unfortunately she did not move, so when the THIRD yank gave the Cowboys the chance to win it all, that shoulder suffered the same fate. (the FIRST yank occurred early in the game)

I have never jumped and screamed so loud, not even for Bedlam. I wrote a note apologizing to our downstairs neighbor. Can’t believe I didn’t wake up our son.

That was a fitting end to what has been an incredible 2 year run for two athletes that made not just winning, but making plays when it matters the norm in Stillwater. Never mind the humbling of Squinky. Gonna miss those guys.

My official player of the game is….Colton Chelf. Blackmon did Blackmon things, Weeden did Weeden things, but when OSU needed some kind of play to inject life into an offense that just went scoreless with 27 yds in the first quarter, it was Weeden to CHELF for 25 plus yards.

And appropriately, it was Weeden to Chelf in the OT that almost sent the Cowboy fans into deliriumville…wait, replay properly showed he was down at the one. DAMN…that would have been REALLY sweet. Instead we get the Weeden keeper for a loss of 4 yards and a couple steps to the right to give Quinn the straight up chip shot for the win. Money.

I give props to Stanford. That is a really good team, and say what you want about Luck…I’ll be eager to see if he turns out to be as good as they think he will be in the NFL.

My defensive player of the game is…the entire defense. Never mind the Gilbert show (what in interception!) and the fumble recovery near the goal line. Stanford held the ball for 42+ minutes…if you count OT…and they did their best work at the end. Granted, they were assisted by a motion penalty AND Stanford going a bit conservative on 2nd and 10, but after being gouged and run over all night, they stuffed a running play for a loss of 3 and got enough pressure on Luck to force a dump off short on 3rd down. This group deserves a rest. That pounding was worse than the ’08 Holiday Bowl (which I mistakenly refered to as the ’09 Holiday Bowl several times last night). Now maybe Gundy will go recruit some beasts for the D-line.

Now what?

Several things come out of this bowl experience.

  • Will Rush and Littlehead fly right for next year?
  • Will Tracy Moore be on a first name basis with the stairmaster after obviously getting benched for some type of poor behavior, then tweeting his frustration about not playing? He should talk to Herschel Sims…
  • The QB competition, IF Lunt comes for the spring semester, will be FASCINATING. Clint Chelf will have LOTS of experience (mostly practice), which is key with this offensive system. However, you have TWO highly rated QB recruits also competing. Walsh has had a year to get his arm in shape, and if he can add that to his legs, he would be a dangerous combo more along the lines of Robinson. Lunt brings more of a Weeden type game;
  • BS Jr will be a Stanford Cardinal, period. Would be NUTS to sit for two years, possibly three, behind Randle/Smith/Sims;
  • If OSU doesn’t lose any assistants to head coaching jobs, I’ll be shocked. Or maybe they have, and I just missed it;
  • I tweeted this last night…Holder needs to drop the ego with Gundy’s contract negotiation. He has said that he made a mistake with Ford…the mistake was giving a ten year contract to an unproven coach. Gundy is NOT unproven. The mistake here would be NOT giving him a ten year contract.  Let’s see…1st outright conf title in school history…how many consecutive winning seasons?…how many consecutive bowl games?…consecutive seasons posting most wins in school history (shall we go for three?)…first BCS bowl (and WIN) AND almost shot at the NC…GIVE HIM THE TEN AND BE DONE WITH THIS.
  • To follow up this point…now that football season is over, we have to watch the coach that DOES have a ten year contract lead a depleted squad through a treacherous Big 12 basketball schedule. Never mind all his players from his first recruiting class left, and the other ones he has lured to Stillwater are NOT necessarily filling the seats and creating energy. Going in the opposite direction of Gundy, but I’ll drop it there;
  • Who do you root for…LSU or Bama? LSU win gets OSU #2 ranking…not shabby. Bama win leaves OSU #3 (highly doubt 1 loss LSU drops below #2), but opens the door for the debate of the century regarding the Cowboys MAYBE getting the AP #1 spot. Doubt it, but would also throw the BCS, as it currently stands, out the window. Would have to go to at least a plus 1 format to keep the public from storming the gates, and that would be, in large part, thanks to OSU. If the Cowboys can’t be #1, then I vote for death to the BCS! Roll Tide!

At this point, let’s revel in the glory of this season. I called it our Season of Hope for a reason. While OSU didn’t get to the summit, they can definitely see it from where they are standing and know that they can do what it takes to make a return trip.

Best wishes to all the seniors, especially Weeden and Blackmon. You guys will bring me back to the NFL next year. Haven’t been there since Barry hung it up.

Now let’s see if basketball can give me a reason to write between now and spring practice.

GO POKES!!!

Hopefully more Fiesta than Siesta for Cowboys…the final game in our Season of Hope

It all started for me on Sept 5, 2011 with this post.

In all my life, I never thought I would see the day, the day on which OSU could cement its position as the #2 FOOTBALL team in the country (assuming LSU beats Bama…more on that later).

The ups and downs of this season were many (way more ups than downs, but one REALLY BIG down, and it wasn’t about a football game).

Blowouts…dramatic comebacks…nerve wracking finishes…and a number of just regular old wins.

The biggest Bedlam victory ever for OSU, not only whipping OU so bad that OU even tried to RUN OUT THE CLOCK, but winning its first outright conference championship in the modern era…and I was there with my big brother.

And now, as the Cowboys prepare for their first ever BCS bowl against Stanford, I have reverted to old fan behavior…pacing the room…nervous as hell…hoping we don’t get blown out…hoping we don’t look inept…hoping AGAINST looking bad.

Then I reviewed all my posts…really, I did…and discovered something.

This team, minus one major tragedy of human proportions, showed up EVERY week. Not only did they show up, but when it was time to make a play, they did. And when the biggest game of their entire season was at hand, OSU not only showed up, but simply dominated a pretty good football team that just happened to be their hated rival.

So now, I’m left with this…

I hope Stanford doesn’t show up with a Super Bowl quality team.

In my lifetime I can say I watched the best running back, wide receiver, and QB in the history or the school, and last two will be on the field for the last time in OSU orange (or black, if rumors are true).

As for the ultimate goal of our “Season of Hope,” the BCS decided we weren’t worthy. Hard to argue too much since we did have control of our own business, at least until the tragic death of two basketball coaches.

The positive that I come away with is this…the BCS is on its way out. It will start with a “Plus 1,” but will inevitably turn into a playoff, and it will be mainly the accomplishment of OSU. Many have said if it had been OU or USC or Texas, that they would have made to NOLA for the big one. But I will go the reverse…if it had been Boise or Houston or Utah or TCU, the powers that be might not have been so pressured to actually consider changing the system. The Cowboys may not have had the pedigree, but they did have the recognition and the athletes to get noticed by the public and many in the mainstream sports media. They had stories…2nd career QB…the tragedy in Arkansas…and they had new unis! If we didn’t get to play for a national championship, well at least we can say, when a playoff finally comes to fruition, we were there when OSU tipped the scales in favor of FAIRNESS.

No matter what happens tonight, I have never enjoyed a season like this. Barry Sanders brought our only Heisman Trophy and plenty of excitement, but that team still suffered heartbreak (see “The Drop”) at the hands of Squinky.

Don’t have much of a prediction, but will say this…if OSU can get out early, Stanford could be in for a long night. However, if this turns into a 4 qtr slugfest, the Cowboys better hope for several of those timely turnovers.

This might be the last game in our Season of Hope, but let’s hope this is only the beginning of many Seasons of Championships.

GO POKES!!!

As it turns out, even Squinky has a conscience….

I’ve decided Squinky must have an ethnic mother…either Italian or Jewish (could be some other ethnic background, but these two I have personal experience with).

How else could you explain the college football events of this past weekend.

I mean, seriously, if that wasn’t a case of guilt, I don’t know what was…the kind of guilt only a mother could put on her son.

I could just imagine the conversation (please insert the appropriate accent and motherly tone)…

Sound of phone ringing…

Squinky: “Hi Mom.”

Squinky’s Mom: ”Eugene?” (Of course this is Squinky’s given name…Squinky is obviously a self applied nickname…I would do the same after years of “Eu-GE-ne”).

S: “Yea Ma, it’s Squinky.”

SM: “You know how I hate that name, Eugene. Sounds like something a girl puts in her hair.”

S: ”That’s a scrunchy Ma.”

SM: “Oh, ok. How was your weekend Eugene.”

S: “Pretty busy, I..”

SM: “…cuz I didn’t hear from you since last Thursday. Ya know, your sisters both called.”

S: “Ma, I was in the middle of…”

SM: “…and your oldest sister, Louise, she called three times. She knows I need updates on my babies.”

S: ”Come on Ma! You know I have a full-time job, and it involves a lot of weekends and evenings.”

SM: “You own your own business, honey. You can’t figure out better hours? You know Martha that lives across the street? Her son, Cooper, has his own business, and he hardly works.”

S: “Mom! You know the demands of my job! I have one extremely high maintenance client, probably the most important one in the country. This client requires constant attention and care, and the only break I get is a brief period between April and August. Cooper ain’t got it so easy right now…his client rehired the only consultant to ever give him trouble. I have it on good authority that he’s looking to dump this one and has several potential suitors. I know for a fact he has interviewed with two.”

SM: “I don’t know names, but I love his current client’s colors. Did they hire that consultant back because his hair matches their outfits?”

S: “UNIFORMS, Ma, UNIFORMS. And NO, Kansas State didn’t hire Bill Snyder back for his silver locks. Besides, Cooper is soft. His dad handed him that job, so he never had to work ’til that guy showed up a few years back, then thought he was back in the saddle when Snyder retired. Wasn’t happy when they brought him back this year, but thought he would have at least a full season to look for other work. I heard Cooper’s being treated for ulcers.”

SM: “Why don’t you check out some of Cooper’s potential clients?”

S: “I’m not lazy like Coop, Ma. I like a challenge. The only potential interest I would have is Texas, but right now it’s an entry level position. Would take a few years to get that program back to where it needs to be before I could really do any good over there.”

SM: “That’s my Eugene. I’ve always said that you would make something of yourself, but really, you need a break, get your name in the paper or something.”

S: “MOM??!! Didn’t you read the article I emailed you?”

SM: “What article? The subject line said something about your client and somebody named Phillips, and the message had some blue characters that were underlined, but that was it. No article. And who’s this Phillips person, never heard of him.”

S: “THAT WAS A LINK MA! Oh never mind.”

SM: “So you said you were busy. Your client have a new project?”

S: “I swear Mom, have you been paying any attention this year? I don’t think I’ve ever had to put in more work with so little payback. You think it’s easy smashing their hopes and dreams every year? And not every client makes you work TWO sports…just look at Cooper.”

SM: “I really wish you wouldn’t describe it that way. You should say you are helping them build character. Much more appealing.”

S: “People don’t pay for character, Ma. The fans want drama, and the BCS has spread the wealth, so it’s that much harder to get the attention I use to get with one lousy bounce. Remember 1988 and ‘The Drop?’ People still remember that kid’s name. I get credited with the flag before that, but that was a lucky break on my part…that was all on the ref.”

“Now everybody’s got an unlucky moment. Hell, it’s even rumored that someone picked up OU as a client, although that hasn’t been confirmed. If I was guessing, I would say yes because nobody hits the upright AND has their best player go down untouched in the same year.”

SM: “I really wish you wouldn’t hurt the players.”

S: “Now Ma, you know me. Our association does have a set of ethics guidelines, but no real enforcement power. Probably a first timer trying to make a name for himself, going for a simple knee sprain, nothing major. You gotta know what you’re doing when you start messing with injuries. In the old days, it was always an unspoken rule…no injuries for the first 20 years, only ‘non-player’ incidents, like bad bounces, penalties, fumbles, dropped passes, missing wide open receivers, busted plays, that kinda stuff. Now everything is fair game…even off the field stuff. You’d be amazed at how many of us spend most of our time going after alumni and boosters. Not me, I’m old school.”

SM: “Yes Eugene, I know. I’m very proud of you for sticking to the principles your dad taught you, although I have to say something about this past weekend.”

S: “Don’t even go there Mom. I didn’t sleep Friday night thinking about what you were going to say to me.”

SM: “Eugene, you need to get your sleep. You get very cranky when you don’t sleep. I was actually hoping you didn’t sleep Thursday night. That would have explained a lot of things.”

S: “You know, Ma, I take pride in what I do, and I always try to stick to the plan, no matter what obstacles get in my way. This weekend I had a plan, a perfect plan, and couldn’t have anticipated what happened. Never had to deal with that kind of situation before. The last time that occurred the school took some time off to heal, so it was out of my hands. I fully expected the game to be postponed, but when those players stood up and said they would go ahead with the game, well, if they can stand up and be strong in the face of such adversity, then I felt it only right that I stand up with them.”

SM: “I wouldn’t say you stood up with them, Eugene.”

S: “You know what I mean, Ma! This it what I’m talking about…after executing one of the best laid plans EVER…probably go down as my greatest achievement…I was watching the players come off the field, listening to the interviews immediately following the game, and the next day, and realized my client didn’t give me 100%. They blew up every conceivable plan I put together this year. None of the old stuff worked. In the past, they were always good to go with one little mishap. That wide receiver Blackmon could be counted on to help, but I didn’t count on that Weeden fella being so tough to work with. Now, 2 or 3 errors per game doesn’t phase them. I decided it was time for a real top-notch disaster, mistakes and misses coming from every direction. Would go perfect with the road game on a Friday night, and Paul Rhoads is always good for a little help.”

“But they didn’t respond…they couldn’t respond. I presumed when they chose to play that I would get their best shot. I didn’t realize they chose to play more out of honor for those folks that died. It was like I sucker punched them, but I didn’t realize it until it was too late.”

“All I could hear was your voice…’EuGEne, that was not a very nice thing to do. Those kids have mommy’s and daddy’s who are really stressed out worrying about their boys. Would you want your mommy to be so stressed? No? Then why don’t you call more often? Your sisters call every day and let me know…’”

SM: “You know, you are right. You should call me more often.”

S: “That’s not the point Mom! The point is I realized that I did something out of line, and needed to try and fix it. So I did. There weren’t a lot of good opportunities, and I didn’t have time to prepare, so it wasn’t easy. But I found 2 teams that decided to cooperate just enough. I thought going after 2 big names would be a bit much without a full-fledged plan, so I went after 1 big name and 1 rival. The rival is always good for helping the other rival feel a bit better.”

“The big name team, Oregon, was the tougher nut to crack. Good team, but they were ripe after the big game last week. Their opponent had just enough talent to make it believable, and Oregon gave me the perfect opportunity…fairly easy FG with no time left. Could do that in my sleep. The rival was a bit tougher. You have any idea how hard it was to make their opponent’s defense look even mediocre? But I pulled it off, and in the process created the greatest improvisational moment ever, even better than the Franco Harris ricochet! That 20 yard deflection hitting another receiver in stride was magical, if I say so myself. Thought I was going to have to pull out another piece of impromptu excellence, but the rival’s coach called a timeout…go figure…and I really didn’t have to do anything. I felt like a I did pretty good, given the circumstances and lack of prep. At least I was able to sleep Saturday night knowing I had reestablished a little equilibrium. Still tough for them to get the big prize, but they still have enough to play for to keep the hope alive. That’s always the most important part of the job…don’t kill the hope completely, or they won’t keep coming back. Nobody’s better at that than me.”

SM: “I’m so proud of you , Son. Your Dad would have been proud too, although I doubt he would agree that you did better than the Franco play…that was pure genius from your father.”

S: “Let’s not argue about that Mom.”

SM: “Okay, fine. When are you coming for Thanksgiving?”

S: “Mom, don’t know if I can make it. Only have two weeks to prepare for Bedlam and I used up all the new stuff I had sitting in the wings. Gotta come up with something they haven’t seen before, or they’re gonna think I’m losing my touch. The good press from Grantland only turned up the pressure to perform. Was flying under the radar for so long, now everybody’s expecting something every week.”

SM: “Your sisters are flying in a day early and are staying until Monday.”

S: “All the more reason to be busy.”

SM: “Now EUgene, that was not necessary. They love you and miss seeing you. They just don’t understand why you haven’t married and settle down yet, and frankly, so do I. I wan’t more grandchildren.”

S: “Mom, it wouldn’t be fair to someone right now. I am totally committed to my work. I’ve  only had one client, and I doubt I’ll ever have another. They’re the best. Oklahoma State is undoubtedly the most valuable client anyone could have. No matter what I’ve done, they always come back, step right back into the ring, like Rocky sequels. But they are figuring out my game. I don’t think I’ll have them much longer. Thought I was going to lose them this year…kinda did, but can’t leave them after what happened. That wouldn’t be fair. One of us needs to go down swinging, taking the other’s best shot. Anything less wouldn’t do our relationship justice.”

SM: “Martha said Cooper is coming home for two weeks.”

S: “Ok, Ok Ma! I’ll see you Thursday morning.”

SM: “That’s my Eugene.”

GO POKES!!!

Just in case we weren’t listening earlier, Life reminded us.

There are way more important things than BCS championships.

We asked the impossible of young men and women.

We asked them to do so much for us.

And it’s not even about us.

They go to schools and sacrifice their bodies for scholarships to get an education, and in a small % of instances, a chance at bigger paydays where professional sports offer opportunity.

We were reminded tonight that these young people, the super heroes we believe them to be, are very human.

This is not to make an excuse, but this group, led by a very mature QB, couldn’t overcome the reality of life.

I posted earlier today on my other blog that Life is the most efficient teacher, and will change our perspective without our consent.

We witnessed that tonight.

A group of kids, and one young adult, couldn’t overcome the loss of two of their university family. It was obvious from the start that this team was a shell of itself. No speed, no intensity, two things they had played with all season. Even our confident leader seemed out of sorts, missing passes like nothing we’ve seen this year.

We saddled them with all our hopes, of dreams of something we had never seen before.

How naive of us.

Normally, things would have proceeded as expected. I don’t think there is any doubt about that.

But this was not a normal day.

If I got a knot in my stomach this morning when I heard the news of the deaths of the two coaches, I can’t begin to imagine what was going on inside those players. The OSU athletic department, by all admissions, is more like family than anything else.

We must remember something very important here…there are lessons being learned as I type that transcend our daily routines, and those lessons have NOTHING to do with football or championships.

I, for one, don’t care if they lose 60-0 to OU. I don’t care if they get a mediocre bowl game and lose that too.

I only care what happens as it pertains to their well being…if God deems it necessary for them to win another game or two in order to be on their way to recovery, then so be it. Otherwise I don’t care about wins and losses. I care about their souls. I sincerely hope they have the support necessary to set this aside and focus on what is truly important.

We will all wake up tomorrow and move on with our lives. I will still fly home, even though I could easily put my ticket on hold for a small fee, to be with family. It just feels like the appropriate thing. I will still get psyched for Bedlam, although this football season is now different, and not so much because OSU lost on the field.

It was different before the game started.

I hope there are plenty of fans to welcome the team home. They need that support.

These kids will need the love of not only their Cowboy family, but also their biological families.

And let us not forget the people who were most affected by the events of the last 24 hours…the families of the coaches and pilots.

I hope, when you all wake up on Saturday, that you have what is TRULY important near to you.

God Bless, and GO POKES!!!

Iowa St at 5-4? Talk about smoke and mirrors…

So, I like stats.

Iowa State is a conundrum of stats.

Will start with the obvious…

  • Record of 5-4, despite allowing 6 more pts/gm than they score;
  • The Cyclones score 24 pts/gm, ranking 86th…
  • …but they allow 30 pts/gm, ranking 81st? (Is it me, or does this seem backwards?)

Given that Iowa St was 3-0 in non-conference action, I’m presuming that the scoring discrepancy will get worse for the 2-4 conference part of the schedule:

  • The Cyclones are only allowing 1 more pt/gm (31) in conference play, and are scoring 3 less per game (21), but if you look at their losses, they are allowing 43 pts/gm, and scoring 19;
  • Those losses were to Tx, Baylor, Mizzou, and A&M;
  • In their wins, they allowed 7 & 10 pts;
  • Their wins were over TT (41 pts…what happened to them?) and Kansas (13 pts)…nuff said…

Based on that, I don’t even think I need to do any explaining.

The best QB in the country and the best WR in the country along with the WORST DEFENSE IN THE COUNTRY playing for the best team in the country have nothing to worry about, just like Coach Gundy said.

OSU takes care of business easily, hopefully getting the starters a little extra rest, but more importantly getting them off the field so the can avoid any “unnecessary physical surprises” (that’s for Kyle at Pistols Firing).

Cowboys 52 – Whirlwinds 17

Then it’s Thanksgiving…

Then it’s a plane ride home to experience the biggest Bedlam in the history of OSU football with my brother and my favorite Cowboy fan of all…Mom.

GO POKES!!!
